Tauck vs. AmaWaterways River Cruise 2026 & 2027: The Complete Comparison from a Certified Advisor for both
Updated: Aug 6
By Danny Stahl, Certified AmaWaterways, Viking, Tauck, Backroads & Silversea Advisor | Danny’s Adventures | dannysadventures.com
The most common question I receive from travelers researching European river cruises is this one: Tauck or AmaWaterways? Both are exceptional. Both are consistently ranked at the top of their category. The question is not which is better. The question is which is better for you, and the answer is specific to your travel style, your priorities, and what you care most about experiencing on the river.
I am Danny Stahl. I am certified in both AmaWaterways and Tauck. I book both every week. I grew up along the Moselle River in Trier, Germany, a certified AmaWaterways and Tauck advisor who has actually stood on the banks of the rivers these ships sail.
I have no financial reason to favor either line. AmaWaterways and Tauck both pay advisor commissions from their own revenue. My job is to match you to the right one. Here is exactly how I do that.
If you are a first-time client with Tauck, I will offer complimentary onboard credits depending on your stateroom category.
If you are a first-time client with AmaWaterways, I will provide you with an onboard credit that you can use for gratuities, the gift shop, laundry services, or the spa. The credit is worth up to $200 - $400, depending on the category of the stateroom you book.

The Core Difference in Plain Language
AmaWaterways: The river cruise line that a river cruise company built. Purpose-designed ships with twin-balcony staterooms, the La Chaine des Rotisseurs culinary standard, a 9,000-bike fleet for guided biking at every port, and the broadest portfolio of rivers on Earth.
AmaWaterways is what a river cruise line looks like when the people who designed it cared most about the culinary experience, the stateroom design, and the daily active options.
Tauck River Cruises: The river cruise line that a 99-year-old luxury land tour company built. Tauck's river ships are an extension of the Tauck philosophy, unlimited premium spirits all day, all gratuities included at every level, a private castle or palace dinner at every Rhine sailing, a salaried Tauck Director present 24 hours throughout the voyage, and the most fully inclusive all-in pricing on any European river.
Tauck river cruises are what happen when the people who designed it cared most about eliminating every possible moment where a guest would need to think about money or logistics.

AmaWaterways' interior design embodies an upscale, contemporary vibe that exudes the elegance of a boutique hotel. With a refreshing blend of modern aesthetics and cozy European charm, their ships are truly inviting. The thoughtful use of natural light, light wood tones, plush fabrics, and polished metallic accents creates an uplifting, airy, and luxurious atmosphere that enhances the entire cruising experience!
The 7 Specific Differences That Actually Decide the Choice
Difference 1: The Twin-Balcony Stateroom vs the Tauck Suite
AmaWaterways Twin-Balcony:
AmaWaterways' twin-balcony design combines a French balcony (floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors that open to a railing, giving you river air and view from inside the stateroom) with a full step-out outdoor balcony in the same cabin. You can stand outside on the full balcony, or you can fold the whole wall of the stateroom away and sit inside with the river directly in front of you.
When AmaSofia (debuting March 2026 on the Rhine) or any AmaWaterways European ship sails through the Rhine Gorge at sunset, every guest in a twin-balcony stateroom is watching 30 medieval castles pass from a private balcony. This stateroom design was invented by AmaWaterways and does not exist on any other river cruise line.

Tauck French Balcony Staterooms:
Tauck's Rhine ships ms Grace and ms Inspire carry 22 Tauck Suites at 300 square feet each the most dedicated suite inventory of any European river ship. The suites feature a separate seating area, a larger bathroom, and premium furnishings. Tauck ships do not have twin-balcony staterooms; most Rhine staterooms have French balconies (floor-to-ceiling glass doors with a railing, not a step-out platform).

Difference 2: The Castle Dinner vs the Chef's Table
Tauck Exclusive Castle Dinner (Every Rhine Sailing):
Every Tauck Rhine sailing includes a Tauck Exclusive private evening, a cocktail reception, multi-course dinner, and entertainment at a historic German castle or palace, exclusively for Tauck guests with no public access.
The Rhine venues rotate between: Schloss Ehreshoven (a 14th-century moated Baroque palace near Cologne), Schloss Biebrich (a 1702 palace in Wiesbaden sitting directly on the Rhine bank), a historic Rheingau wine estate in the mountains above the river, and on family departures, Burg Satzvey (a preserved medieval moated castle).
These dinners are included in the cruise fare at no additional charge. No other river cruise line on the Rhine offers a private castle dinner as a standard included feature. This one experience defines what a Tauck Exclusive means in practice.
AmaWaterways Chef's Table:
AmaWaterways' Chef's Table is a specialty multi-course tasting menu served in a dedicated dining space aboard every AmaWaterways ship, included in the cruise fare at no additional charge (reservation required). The culinary standard is defined by the La Chaine des Rotisseurs certification, the international culinary society's mark of distinction, awarded to AmaWaterways as the only river cruise line meeting its standards. The Chef's Table menu changes by region and features regionally inspired dishes.
Difference 3: Beverage Policy — Wine/Beer with Meals vs Unlimited Spirits All Day
Tauck Beverage Policy:
Tauck river ships include unlimited complimentary beverages throughout the entire day premium spirits, wine, beer, cocktails, coffee, tea, and soft drinks from morning until the last guest goes to bed. A pre-dinner cognac. A morning Bloody Mary. Afternoon wines during the scenic sailing of the Wachau Valley.
There is no moment aboard a Tauck river ship where you are presented with a bill for a beverage. This policy extends to the cash allowance for incidentals that Tauck includes for small personal purchases at ports. The all-in character of Tauck's financial model is most viscerally felt in the beverage policy: you simply never think about paying for anything.
AmaWaterways Beverage Policy:
AmaWaterways includes complimentary wine and beer with every lunch and dinner, the daily Sip & Sail cocktail hour, and coffee, tea, and juice. Water and soft drinks are available at any time. Premium spirits, cocktails, and beverages outside of mealtimes are available for purchase. The wine program for 2026 includes over 30 complimentary selections across red, white, and rose.
Difference 4: Shore Excursions — Choice vs Full Curation
Tauck Excursion Model:
Tauck's excursion model is fully curated: a single expertly designed excursion program at every port, guided by the Tauck Director and specialist local guides. There are no options to choose from and no optional additions at extra cost. This model means the Tauck Director has designed the most interesting and access-rich program available at each port and is leading all guests through it together.
The Tauck Exclusive events, the castle dinner, the private palace access, the after-hours museum entry on select itineraries are built into this curated program and are not available as optional add-ons on AmaWaterways. Tauck guests trust the curation; AmaWaterways guests enjoy the flexibility.
AmaWaterways Excursion Model:
AmaWaterways offers up to 6 excursion options at every port, all included, no extra charge. Classic (the comprehensive guided city tour), Active (guided bike tour or hike covering more ground than the walking tour), Gentle (shorter, flatter walking tour for guests who prefer a less demanding pace), plus specialty options at select ports.
Bikes aboard every European ship allow self-guided cycling at any port independently of the organized excursion. The active biking and hiking options are specifically why AmaWaterways is the river cruise line of choice for physically active travelers.
Difference 5: Gratuities — What Is Actually Included
Tauck Gratuities:
All gratuities are included on Tauck river cruises for every staff member except the Tauck Director. This means: restaurant staff, hotel staff, local guides, drivers, and all ship crew. At the end of a Tauck river cruise, no one hands you a tipping guide or leaves an envelope.
The only discretionary gratuity is for the Tauck Director, where Tauck suggests $10-$15 per person per day. Every other gratuity is handled. On a luxury river cruise where the cost is already $4,890 to $9,000+ per person, the psychological value of not managing gratuities is meaningful.
AmaWaterways Gratuities:
AmaWaterways gratuities for all onboard staff are extra. Generally $155 per person in a stateroom for a seven day cruise.
Difference 6: Destinations — Breadth vs Rhine/Danube Depth
Tauck River Destination Portfolio:
Tauck's river cruise program centers on the Rhine, Danube, Seine, Saone, Douro, and Moselle, with chartered ships on some itineraries and owned ships on the Rhine (ms Grace and ms Inspire). Tauck's Rhine program with ms Grace and ms Inspire is the core of their river product and where the Tauck Exclusive castle dinners and Tauck Director model most powerfully differentiate. The Moselle itinerary is one of the few Tauck-specific river experiences not offered by AmaWaterways in the same format.
AmaWaterways Destination Portfolio:
AmaWaterways operates on more rivers than any other premium river cruise line: Rhine, Danube, Seine, Rhone, Douro, Moselle, Guadalquivir, Mekong (Vietnam/Cambodia), Nile (Egypt with AmaDahlia and AmaLilia), Chobe (Africa aboard the Zambezi Queen), Magdalena (Colombia with AmaMagdalena and AmaMelodia).
Difference 7: The Danny Stahl Advisor Advantage
I have close relationships with both AmaWaterways and Tauck executive teams. Meaning I get access to promotions and perks not available to the general public.
The Rhine River: AmaWaterways vs Tauck Head-to-Head
The Rhine is both lines' most-booked river and the best direct comparison. Here is exactly what each delivers on a 7-night Rhine sailing:
Experience Element | AmaWaterways Rhine | Tauck Rhine (ms Grace/Inspire) |
Ports | Amsterdam, Cologne, Koblenz, Rudesheim, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, Basel (varies) | Similar Rhine circuit; specific ports vary by itinerary |
Ship capacity | 156 guests | 130 guests maximum |
Stateroom design | Twin-balcony (French + step-out outdoor balcony) | French balcony standard; 22 Tauck Suites at 300 sq ft |
Rhine Gorge viewing | Outdoor twin-balcony or Sun Deck | French balcony or Sun Deck |
Meals | All meals with regionally inspired cuisine | All meals with high culinary standard |
Tauck’s interior design on its ships can be characterized as an elegant blend of classic nautical elements and regional charm, resembling a residential style. Instead of choosing ultra-modern or overly flashy aesthetics, Tauck emphasizes a timeless, upscale atmosphere that feels cozy and welcoming.
Who Should Choose AmaWaterways and Who Should Choose Tauck

Want twin-balcony staterooms (French + full outdoor) in every cabin | Want the Tauck Director model — one salaried expert present 24 hours throughout |

Are focused on the Mekong, Nile, or Colombia — rivers Tauck does not serve | Are focused on the Rhine or Danube and want exclusive castle access not available elsewhere |
I grew up along the Moselle River in Trier, Germany. I have sailed the Rhine. I have walked the Wachau Valley vineyard paths. I have been in the Schloss Ehreshoven courtyard at night when the candles are lit and the Tauck castle dinner begins.
I have sat in a twin-balcony AmaWaterways stateroom at sunset watching the Rhine Gorge castles pass one by one while drinking Riesling from the valley where Riesling was invented. Both are extraordinary. They are extraordinary in different ways. My job is to tell you which extraordinary fits you.

Frequently Asked Questions: Tauck vs AmaWaterways River Cruise
What is the difference between Tauck and AmaWaterways river cruises?
AmaWaterways is a purpose-built river cruise line offering twin-balcony staterooms, La Chaine des Rotisseurs culinary certification, guided biking at every port, the Chef's Table specialty dining included nightly, and the broadest river portfolio including Mekong, Nile, Africa, and Colombia. Tauck river cruises are built on the Tauck land tour philosophy: unlimited premium spirits all day, all gratuities included, a private castle or palace dinner at every Rhine sailing, a salaried Tauck Director present 24 hours throughout the voyage, and the most fully inclusive pricing on any European river. AmaWaterways is better for active travelers and culinary enthusiasts. Tauck is better for travelers who want unlimited beverages, castle exclusives, and the all-in financial model.
Is Tauck or AmaWaterways better for Rhine River cruise?
Both are excellent on the Rhine with different strengths. AmaWaterways delivers the twin-balcony stateroom (French balcony plus full step-out outdoor balcony), guided biking through Rhine villages, the Chef's Table specialty dining every night, and the La Chaine des Rotisseurs culinary standard. Tauck delivers a private castle or palace dinner included at every sailing (Schloss Ehreshoven, Schloss Biebrich, or a Rheingau wine estate), unlimited premium spirits all day, all gratuities included for all staff, and maximum 130 guests versus AmaWaterways' average 150. AmaWaterways is the better Rhine choice for active travelers who want the biking program. Tauck is the better Rhine choice for milestone celebrations where the castle dinner is the defining moment.
Is AmaWaterways more expensive than Tauck?
Tauck river cruises typically start at a slightly higher per-person price than AmaWaterways on comparable Rhine and Danube itineraries (Tauck from approximately $4,490 per person vs AmaWaterways from approximately $3,499 per person on 7-night Rhine sailings). However, Tauck includes unlimited premium spirits all day, all gratuities, and a private castle dinner that AmaWaterways does not include. When these additions are priced separately on AmaWaterways, the actual cost difference narrows significantly.
Does Tauck or AmaWaterways include more in the price?
Tauck includes more in its all-in price: unlimited premium spirits throughout the day (versus AmaWaterways' wine and beer with meals), all gratuities for every staff member except the Tauck Director (AmaWaterways includes onboard staff gratuities), a private castle dinner at every Rhine sailing, and a cash allowance for incidentals. AmaWaterways includes the Chef's Table specialty dining included nightly, guided biking at every port, and a broader set of daily excursion options (up to 6 per port). Both include all meals, Wi-Fi, port charges, and shore excursions.
