I grew up on the Moselle. Here's how to cruise it right.

I'm Danny Stahl, and I grew up in Trier, Germany's oldest city, on the banks of the Moselle River. Long before I became a certified travel advisor, the Moselle was simply home. I grew up on the Rhine as well. My family and I took local river cruises up and down both rivers, so I know these waters from the deck, not from a brochure.

One of my favorite memories is the week we spent at Rheinfels Castle in St. Goar high above the Rhine. The rooms were enormous, the cuisine and service were exceptional, and we honestly felt like royalty. That's the standard I hold every trip I plan to: it should feel like an experience, not a transaction.

Today I plan river cruises for travelers across North Carolina and the U.S. The Moselle is the river I'm asked about least and recommend most. It's quieter than the Rhine, more intimate than the Danube, and its villages look almost exactly as they did when I was a youngster.

My Insight: Most Moselle river cruises are 7-night "Rhine & Moselle" itineraries. They spend 2 to 3 days on the Moselle, calling at Cochem, Bernkastel-Kues and Trier, and sometimes Luxembourg. The best months are April, May, September and October. For first-timers, the right line depends on whether you care most about food, active excursions or all-inclusive value. The comparison table below shows every option.

How the Moselle differs from the Rhine and Danube

The Moselle is smaller, slower and more personal. It loops through tight bends between some of the steepest vineyards in Europe, and the towns sit right at the water's edge.

Moselle

Rhine

Feel

Village-scale, quiet, wine-focused

Castles, busy shipping lane

Signature sights

Roman Trier, Cochem's Reichsburg, half-timbered Bernkastel

Rhine Gorge castles, Cologne Cathedral

Wine

Riesling grown on slate slopes

Rheingau Riesling, Alsace whites

Best for

Repeat cruisers, wine lovers, travelers who hate crowds

First-timers who want the classic route

How you sail it

Usually combined with the Rhine on one 7-night trip

Many itineraries, 7 to 14 nights

My take: if you have done the Danube, the Moselle is the best second river cruise in Europe. If it's your first cruise, a Rhine & Moselle combination gives you the famous castles and the quiet villages in one week. Having grown up on both rivers, it's the trip I'd plan for my own family.

Every Moselle river cruise, compared

Seven lines currently sail the Moselle. The biggest differences are how many Moselle stops you get (1 to 4) and whether the trip is 7, 11 or 14 nights.

What matters most: if Trier is on your list (and it should be), pick an itinerary that docks there. Viking, Emerald, AmaWaterways Fairytales and Uniworld all do.

Porta Nigra, Trier

Inside the Porta Nigra

The Porta Nigra in was built around 170 AD in Trier, Germany, the Porta Nigra (Latin for "Black Gate") is the largest surviving Roman city gate north of the Alps and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Port by port: what a local would tell you

Most Moselle itineraries call at the same five or six towns. Here's what to prioritize at each, from someone who grew up there.

Port

Don't miss

My insider tip

Trier

Porta Nigra (Roman city gate), Constantine Basilica, Imperial Baths, Trier Cathedral, the Hauptmarkt

Trier was founded by the Romans more than 2,000 years ago. Skip the shops and walk the Roman sites in order: Porta Nigra, the Cathedral, the Basilica, then the baths. Coffee lovers visit my favorite coffee shop Shluk and my favorite bakery Ditsch

Bernkastel-Kues

The half-timbered market square, the leaning Spitzhäuschen, Landshut castle ruins

Climb to Landshut for the best valley view on the river. My favorite winery in Bernkastel-Kues is Weingut Dr. Loosen, a celebrated icon of the Moselle valley known for thier Rieslings and Pinot Blanc

Cochem

Reichsburg castle, the historic mustard mill, the chairlift viewpoint

The castle tour sells out on summer port days. Ask your advisor to book a timed entry. My favorite bratwurst in Germany is at Zom Stuffje

Zell

Riesling tastings, the riverside promenade

Small and quiet. Good for a slow afternoon instead of a guided tour.

Koblenz

Deutsches Eck, where the Moselle meets the Rhine; the cable car to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress

Ride the cable car up for the view of both rivers joining.

Wasserbillig / Luxembourg

Day trip to Luxembourg City, the Moselle's Luxembourg wine villages

Luxembourg makes excellent sparkling wine (Crémant). Try it here. My favorite winery in Luxembourg is Domaine Ruppert

Don't miss the scenery between ports. The Bremmer Calmont slope near Bremm is one of the steepest vineyards in Europe, and the river's tight bends are best seen from the sun deck. Also I also recommend being on the sun deck Between Zell and Cochem, as the river carves deep curves through a spectacular vineyards. Excellent photograph opportunities.

Best time to cruise the Moselle

September and October are the best months. The grape harvest is underway, wine festivals fill the villages, and summer crowds are gone.

Moselle river cruise FAQ

Which river cruise lines sail the Moselle? AmaWaterways, Viking, Avalon, Emerald, Scenic, Uniworld and Tauck all offer itineraries that include the Moselle. Most combine it with the Rhine.

How long is a Moselle river cruise? Most are 7 nights. Longer versions run 10 to 14 nights and add the full Rhine, Belgium or the Netherlands.

Do Moselle river cruises stop in Trier? Many do, but not all. Viking, Emerald, AmaWaterways Rhine & Moselle Fairytales and Uniworld's Grand Discovery stop in Trier. Check before you book, because Trier is the highlight of the river.

What is the best month for a Moselle river cruise? September and October, for the grape harvest, wine festivals and fewer crowds. May and June are a close second.

Is the Moselle or the Rhine better for a river cruise? The Rhine has the famous castles; the Moselle has quieter villages and better scenery up close. A Rhine & Moselle itinerary gives you both in one week.

Can you do a Moselle river cruise at Christmas? Yes. Viking's A Tale of Three Rivers has November departures from Trier, home to a Christmas market on its historic Hauptmarkt.

Is it more expensive to book a Moselle cruise through travel advisor Danny? No Danny is paid by the cruise lines, so you pay the same fare or less, plus advisor-only perks.
