The Short Answer: Silversea, Seabourn or Viking for Alaska?
Choose Seabourn for the best all-around luxury Alaska cruise with Glacier Bay on the route: a 600-guest all-suite ship, every drink included, kayak and Zodiac Ventures, and the new 8-day Denali Experience land package.
Choose Silversea for the smallest ships and the most personal service: a butler in every suite, 36 Alaska voyages in 2027, and the widest menu of land programs, from Rocky Mountaineer rail to bear-viewing flights.
Choose Viking for the best value and the longest classic route: an 11-day Vancouver-to-Seward voyage with a free tour in every port, adults-only ships, and extensions including the 6-night Rocky Mountaineer Journey and 5-night Denali Explorer.
Silversea vs Seabourn vs Viking in Alaska at a Glance
What's new for 2027–2028
Seabourn launched "The Denali Experience" — an 8-day, 7-night pre-cruise land journey from Anchorage with all meals and four-star stays, for select 2027 and 2028 voyages. Seabourn Encore returns with 18 departures from May to September 2027.
Viking adds a 15-day Alaskan Fjords and the Inside Passage route for 2028 (Vancouver to Whittier) with first-time calls at Klawock and Yakutat Bay.
Silversea sails 36 Alaska voyages in 2027 and has expanded its Alaska and Canada land programs.
Seabourn's Alaska culinary and cocktail program — regional seafood, foraged ingredients, and drinks like the Glacier Fir made with glacial ice, continues in 2027.

Itineraries: Routes, Ports and the Glacier Question
The single question I get most about Alaska comparisons is: does the ship enter Glacier Bay? The National Park Service limits how many cruise ships may enter Glacier Bay each day, so not every line, or every sailing gets in. Hubbard Glacier is the other headline, and it's spectacular too.
Silversea | Seabourn | Viking
Classic route | Seward ↔ Vancouver (8 days on Silver Muse, 2028): Hubbard Glacier, Juneau, Haines, Sitka, Klawock | Juneau ↔ Vancouver and longer 7–15-day routes; 15 ports | Vancouver ↔ Seward (11 days): Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Skagway, Hubbard Glacier, Valdez |
Glacier Bay | Check by sailing | Featured on select itineraries; every voyage includes Glacier Bay or Hubbard Glacier | Not on the classic route (Hubbard Glacier instead) |
Boutique ports | Klawock, Haines | Inian Islands; Wrangell-St. Elias (UNESCO) | Valdez; Klawock and Yakutat Bay (2028) |
Longer options | 15-day roundtrip Vancouver on Silver Whisper (July 2027); 17-day North Pacific to Japan | 10- and 11-day Alaska Summer Solstice voyages, combinable into 21 days | 15-day Alaskan Fjords and the Inside Passage (2028); North Pacific Passage; 37-day Far East & Alaska |
Embark from Seattle | Yes, on select Silver Whisper sailings | — | — |
Danny's advice: if Glacier Bay is a must, start with Seabourn and confirm the exact sailing. If you want Valdez and Prince William Sound, Viking's route is unique. If you want small boutique ports like Klawock and Haines on a small ship, look at Silversea.
The Best Pre- and Post-Cruise Land Extensions
For many travelers, the land extensions like Denali or the Canadian Rockies is half the trip. Each line packages it differently.
Viking
Extension | Length | Highlights |
Rocky Mountaineer Journey | 6 nights, fully guided | Canada's famous glass-domed rail journey through the Rockies, paired with Vancouver on Alaska & the Inside Passage, North Pacific Passage and Grand Pacific Explorer |
Denali Explorer | 5 nights, fully guided | Anchorage, Denali and Talkeetna; dome railcar ride north to Denali; Viking Tour Director helps plan your park time |
Pristine Alaska | 6 nights, fully guided | A longer Alaska interior program |
Vancouver / Anchorage | 2 nights each | Simple city stays before or after |
Seabourn
Extension | Length | Highlights |
The Denali Experience (new for 2027–2028) | 8 days, 7 nights, pre-cruise | Departs Anchorage with a scenic rail journey into the interior and deep into Denali National Park; four-star hotels and resorts; daily breakfast, lunch and dinner; tour leaders and local experts; farewell dinner at Tracy's King Crab Shack in Juneau before you board |
Silversea
Extension | Length | Highlights |
Denali Summit of North America | 4 nights, pre or post | Grande Denali Lodge; evening reception with a mountaineer speaker; optional Denali flightseeing upgrade |
Denali Adventure | 4 nights, pre or post | Alaska Railroad and Denali National Park |
Majestic Canadian Rockies | 6 nights pre, 4 nights post | Rocky Mountaineer glass-domed coaches through Fraser Canyon, Castle Mountain and the Spiral Tunnels; Banff |
Flight to Bear Country | 2 nights, pre or post | Bear-viewing flight; Alaska wildlife |
Very Victoria | 3 nights, pre or post | Victoria and Vancouver Island |
Which extension wins?
Best Rocky Mountaineer pairing: Viking's 6-night Rocky Mountaineer Journey and Silversea's Majestic Canadian Rockies are both strong; Viking's is fully guided; Silversea's pairs the rail journey's storytelling hosts and gourmet onboard meals with Silversea-curated stays.
Most complete Denali trip: Seabourn's 7-night Denali Experience, with every meal included.
Shortest Denali add-on: Silversea's 4-night programs.
Most unusual: Silversea's Flight to Bear Country.
Ships and Staterooms
Silversea's Alaska ships are smallest, Seabourn's suites are the most indulgent per dollar, and Viking's verandas are the most consistent.
Silversea | Seabourn | Viking
Ship | Silver Whisper (2001, ~388 guests); Silver Muse (2017, ~596) | Seabourn Encore (2016, 600) | Viking Orion and Viking Venus (930 guests; Orion has 464 crew) |
Cabin type | All suites, nearly all with verandas | All suites with verandas | All veranda staterooms |
Butler | Every suite | Suite stewardess; butler-style service in top suites | No |
Top suites | Owner's and Grand Suites | Wintergarden, Signature and Owner's Suites | Explorer Suites (wraparound verandas) |
Glacier viewing | Small ship, low decks close to the water | The Retreat cabanas and Observation Bar | Explorers' Lounge, two decks of forward-facing glass; infinity pool |
Wellness | Spa (extra) | The Spa at Seabourn (extra) | Nordic Spa thermal suite with snow grotto (included) |
Kids | Allowed, no programs | Allowed | Adults only |
Danny's advice: in Alaska, your veranda earns its keep, glaciers, whales and eagles appear without warning. On Viking, every cabin has one. On Silversea and Seabourn, every suite does too, plus more room to spread out.
Dining, Entertainment and Service
Seabourn brings the most Alaska to the table, Silversea the most personal service, and Viking the most enrichment.

Alaska touches | S.A.L.T. destination cuisine on newer ships | Alaska culinary program: regional seafood, local and foraged ingredients; cocktails like the Glacier Fir and Inside Passage Punch with glacial ice | Regional specialties on the menu; Mamsen's Norwegian deli |
In-suite dining | 24 hours | 24 hours | 24 hours |

Excursions, Inclusions and the True Cost
Viking includes a tour in every port; Silversea and Seabourn include all your drinks and tips but charge for most Alaska excursions, and Alaska excursions (floatplanes, whale watching, glacier landings) are expensive.

Silversea | Seabourn | Viking

10 Insider Tips for a Luxury Alaska Cruise
Ask whether your sailing enters Glacier Bay — it isn't on every route.
Book Denali pre-cruise when you can; you arrive rested for the ship and can see the mountain before a long sea trip.
Don't overpay for one side of the ship; at glaciers, captains typically turn the ship so both sides get the view.
Book floatplanes and helicopters early; seats are limited and weather cancels them often.
Pack layers and a waterproof shell, even in July.
Bring binoculars for whales, bears and eagles.
Use Silversea's excursion credit on the big-ticket tours — floatplanes, glacier landings, not the walking tours.
On Viking, prepay the service charge.
Allow a buffer day before embarkation in Vancouver or Anchorage.
Book 12–18 months out; luxury Alaska suites and land programs sell first.
