Viking Dining Standard:
Viking’s dining is consistently good, well-executed, regionally influenced menus in The
Restaurant (the main dining room), with white linen, attentive service, and rotating seasonal
dishes. The Aquavit Terrace at the bow of every Longship is genuinely one of the most
pleasant places to eat on a European river cruise, an indoor-outdoor dining space at the
front of the ship where you can watch the approaching river landscape while eating lunch.
The key distinction: the Aquavit Terrace serves the same food as The Restaurant in a
different setting. It is not a specialty dining venue. Viking has no equivalent to the Chef's
Table. For travelers who consider fine dining a highlight of the journey rather than a
background amenity, AmaWaterways is the right line.
Difference 2: Excursions — Multiple Options vs One Included Per Port
AmaWaterways Excursion Model:
AmaWaterways includes multiple excursion options per port at different activity levels in
every cruise fare: Gentle (shorter, flatter routes for guests who prefer less physical exertion),
Regular (the comprehensive guided city experience), and Active (guided bike rides, hikes, or
wellness walks). On the Danube, this means a guest can cycle the Wachau Valley bike path
while their companion does the guided walking tour of Melk Abbey, and they reunite for
apricot strudel at the hotel.
Nobody compromises. Additionally, AmaWaterways carries a complimentary bicycle fleet on every European ship, not as an optional extra but as a standard feature. Viking Excursion Model:
Viking includes one excursion per port in the base fare, typically a guided walking tour or
panoramic coach tour covering the port’s major highlights. Additional specialty excursions
(Privileged Access experiences including behind-hours museum access, private palaces, the
Vienna Boys’ Choir backstage concert) are available at additional cost.
Viking’s Privileged Access excursions are culturally distinctive and justifiably popular, blending your own bottle of Cognac, being taken behind the scenes at institutions that are not normally
accessible to tour groups. But they are add-ons, not inclusions. For travelers who want
maximum daily excursion flexibility included in the fare, AmaWaterways provides more. For
travelers who want a single well-organized cultural experience per port with the option to
purchase deeper access, Viking’s model is clean and easy to use.
Difference 4: Families vs Adults-Only
This is the only binary difference between AmaWaterways and Viking:
AmaWaterways welcomes guests aged 4 and above on European river ships. Viking requires all guests to be 18 or older on all river cruises, with no exceptions.

AmaMagna on the Danube:
The AmaMagna is nearly twice the width of a standard river ship 23 meters wide versus 11 meters for a standard European river vessel. The width expands everything: staterooms on AmaMagna are among the largest in river cruising, the dining venues are more numerous and more spread out, and the Sun Deck provides a pool (the only river ship with a full pool on the Danube). The trade-off: AmaMagna’s width means it cannot sail certain rivers or lock systems, limiting it primarily to the Danube.
