Viking’s Highest-Rated Pre/Post Cruise Extension

The Oxford & Highclere Castle extension is officially Viking’s highest-rated cruise extension of any kind, across all their river and ocean itineraries worldwide. It was co-created by Karine Hagen and the Carnarvon family and has been available exclusively through Viking since 2014. You cannot access this experience independently the Privileged Access visit to Highclere Castle is available only to Viking guests through this extension.

Downton Abbey ran for six seasons on PBS MASTERPIECE and made Highclere Castle, the real estate in Hampshire, England, home to the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon one of the most recognized buildings in the world. Viking has had an exclusive partnership with the Carnarvon family since 2014, making it the only cruise line with Privileged Access to the castle for guest experiences. Three distinct extensions are available, each designed for different Viking itineraries and lengths of time.

Whether you are sailing the Rhine on a Viking Longship, exploring the British Isles on a Viking ocean ship, there is a Highclere Castle experience designed specifically for your itinerary.

Extension 1: Oxford & Highclere Castle — Viking’s Highest-Rated Extension

Three nights. The English countryside. Viking’s most acclaimed pre/post cruise experience. Here is exactly what happens:

Day 1: Arrival — Champagne Welcome & Oxford

Transfer from your cruise disembarkation point to Oxford by private coach. Check in to a premium Oxford hotel and receive Viking’s signature champagne welcome. The afternoon is yours to explore the city at leisure before an orientation walk.

Day 2: Oxford University & Blenheim Palace

Morning: Privileged Access to the University of Oxford, founded in 1096 and the alma mater of kings, presidents, prime ministers, and poets. Viking’s exclusive access takes guests behind doors closed to the standard public tour. Afternoon: Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in 1705, Blenheim is one of the grandest country houses in England and one of the most visited historic properties in the country. Afternoon tea on the estate.

Day 3: Highclere Castle, The Real Downton Abbey

The centerpiece of the extension and the reason Viking’s guests rate it their highest-ever experience. Viking’s Privileged Access to Highclere Castle goes beyond the standard visitor experience it is a personal encounter with one of England’s great country estates, made possible exclusively through Viking’s 10-year partnership with the Carnarvon family.

What Viking guests experience at Highclere that standard visitors do not:

• A Privileged Access tour of the castle's state rooms, private rooms, and Egyptian collection, including artifacts from the 5th Earl's sponsorship of Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb

•  Meeting long-serving members of the Highclere estate staff the people who make Downton Abbey feel like a real working home, not a film set

• Private access to areas of the estate not on the public tour route

• The personal connection to the Carnarvon family story that Karine Hagen's decade-long relationship with Lady Fiona Carnarvon has built

• The estate grounds, walled gardens, and parkland in conditions that standard day visitors never experience

This is not a museum visit. It is a private encounter with a living English country estate that has been in the Carnarvon family for generations. It feels like being invited to a friend’s home that happens to be one of the most beautiful buildings in England.

Extension 2: Great Homes, Gardens & Gin — The British Country Estate Immersion

Five days. Three iconic British estates. One legendary gin distillery. Each property connected to a celebrated PBS MASTERPIECE series that Viking’s guests know intimately.

Broughton Castle — Wolf Hall

Estate grounds, walled gardens, parkland

Lord and Lady Saye and Sele welcome Viking guests personally

Extension 3: British Collections of Ancient Egypt — For Nile River Cruise Guests

Five nights. Pre-cruise only. Available exclusively for guests booked on Viking’s Pharaohs & Pyramids Nile River itinerary.

This is the most intellectually specific of the three extensions and the one that rewards the most curious traveler. The 5th Earl of Carnarvon whose family still owns Highclere Castle today was the financial patron of archaeologist Howard Carter and was present at the opening of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. The artifacts he brought back from Egypt before his sudden death in Cairo are still housed at Highclere Castle today.

•  Highclere Castle’s Egyptian collection — a private viewing of the artifacts the 5th Earl brought back from the Carnarvon/Carter excavation, including items connected directly to the Tutankhamun discovery

•   British Museum Egyptian galleries — among the finest collections of ancient Egyptian artifacts outside Egypt, with a guided focus on the Carter and Carnarvon expedition story

•   Retracing the footsteps of Howard Carter — the specific sites in England and at Highclere connected to the man who spent 15 years excavating before finding the most famous tomb in history

•   Full historical and Egyptological context for what guests will experience on the Nile — arriving in Egypt already knowing the story of the discovery, the people involved, and the political circumstances surrounding it

Why this extension matters: Most travelers arrive in Egypt with general knowledge of the Pyramids and Tutankhamun. This extension arrives with specific, personal, and emotionally resonant context rooted in the actual family whose home many of them have watched on television for years. The connection between Highclere Castle and the Valley of the Kings is one of the most extraordinary coincidences in the history of exploration and Viking is the only cruise line that makes it available as a coherent journey.

Frequently Asked Questions: Viking Downton Abbey & Highclere Castle

Can I visit Highclere Castle on a Viking cruise?

Yes. Viking has offered exclusive Privileged Access to Highclere Castle, the filming location of Downton Abbey, since 2014 through a partnership with the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. The access is available on three different pre- and post-cruise extensions: Oxford & Highclere Castle (3 nights, available on select river and ocean cruises), Great Homes, Gardens & Gin (4 to 5 nights, available on select river and ocean cruises), and British Collections of Ancient Egypt (5 nights pre-cruise, available for Nile River cruise guests only). The experiences are co-created with the Carnarvon family and are available exclusively through Viking.

What is the difference between Oxford & Highclere Castle and Great Homes, Gardens & Gin?

Oxford & Highclere Castle is a 3-night extension focused on the University of Oxford, Blenheim Palace (Churchill’s birthplace), and Highclere Castle. It is Viking’s highest-rated cruise extension overall and is available on select Paris river cruises, the London/Paris/D-Day river itinerary, and the British Isles Explorer ocean cruise. Great Homes, Gardens & Gin is a 4 to 5-night extension that adds Broughton Castle (Wolf Hall, the Fiennes family home), Chavenage House (Poldark), and the Bombay Sapphire distillery at Laverstock Mill, alongside the Highclere Castle visit. It is designed for PBS MASTERPIECE viewers who want to experience multiple British estates across different series.

What is the Viking British Collections of Ancient Egypt extension?

The British Collections of Ancient Egypt is a 5-night pre-cruise extension available exclusively for guests booked on Viking’s Pharaohs & Pyramids Nile River cruise itinerary. It retraces the story of archaeologist Howard Carter and his patron the 5th Earl of Carnarvon — whose family still owns Highclere Castle today. Highlights include a private viewing of the Egyptian artifact collection at Highclere Castle, the British Museum’s Egyptian galleries, and full historical context for the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb that guests are about to retrace on the Nile.

Which Viking river cruises include the Highclere Castle extension?

The Oxford & Highclere Castle extension is available on select departures of Paris & the Heart of Normandy, Cities of Light, and London, Paris & D-Day river cruises. The Great Homes, Gardens & Gin extension is available on select Rhine Getaway river cruise departures. The British Collections of Ancient Egypt extension is available pre-cruise on the Pharaohs & Pyramids Nile River itinerary. A certified Viking advisor confirms current availability on specific 2026 and 2027 departure dates.

Can I book the Highclere Castle extension on a Viking ocean cruise?

Yes. The Oxford & Highclere Castle extension and the Great Homes, Gardens & Gin extension are both available on select Viking ocean cruise itineraries, most notably the British Isles Explorer (15 days, Bergen to London). The British Isles Explorer with a Highclere extension was the grand prize itinerary in Viking’s most recent Downton Abbey partnership sweepstakes, with an estimated combined value of over $33,000 per couple including business class airfare. A certified advisor confirms which ocean departures currently include Highclere extension availability.

Is the Viking Highclere Castle extension worth it?

Yes, it is officially Viking’s highest-rated cruise extension across all their river and ocean itineraries worldwide. The Oxford & Highclere Castle extension was co-created by Viking’s Karine Hagen and the Carnarvon family and represents a Privileged Access experience not available to the general public. For Downton Abbey fans, the experience of walking through the real estate that served as the setting for six series is genuinely different from visiting any other historic house. The Egyptian artifacts collection at Highclere, the personal stories from long-serving estate staff, and the intimacy of a Viking-exclusive experience on private grounds make this significantly more meaningful than a standard Highclere Castle public visit day.
