Oktoberfest and Christmas market departures fill first:
Tauck’s Autumn Along the Rhine & Munich’s Oktoberfest cruise sells out fastest of any Tauck Germany product — Oktoberfest itself runs only in September, and Tauck’s reserved tent seats are a finite, non-transferable allocation. December Christmas market river cruise departures on the Rhine and Danube also fill 12+ months in advance.
I grew up in Germany on the banks of the Moselle river, Germany is the most narratively layered destination in Europe. Roman ruins, medieval half-timbered towns, Baroque castles, the darkest chapter of 20th-century history, and a present-tense culture defined by extraordinary craft, cuisine, and engineering. Tauck operates three distinct Germany programs a 13 to 14-day land journey from Frankfurt to Berlin, a Rhine river cruise that ends at Oktoberfest in Munich, and the Rhine & Moselle river cruise that covers Germany’s most dramatic river landscape each with Tauck Exclusive experiences no other operator can offer.

Romantic Germany: The 13-Day Land Journey from Frankfurt to Berlin
This is Tauck’s flagship Germany land tour,13 days covering the country from the Rhine Valley to the Bavarian Alps to the Saxon Baroque to the reunified capital. It is structured around Tauck’s Yellow Roads philosophy: the Black Forest High Road, the Romantic Road, and the off-route routes through landscapes that the motorway bypasses entirely.
Tauck Exclusives on the Romantic Germany Land Tour
Private Rhine River cruise: a private cruise along the legendary Lorelei Valley and Rhine Gorge, past the castle chain and vineyard-draped hillsides that define Germany’s most cinematic river landscape not a shared sightseeing cruise, a Tauck-only experience
Candlelight dinner in a Black Forest pudelstein hut: a traditional woodcutter’s mountain hut in the depths of the Black Forest, lit by candles, serving regional Black Forest cuisine. One of the most requested Tauck Exclusive experiences in the Germany catalog.
Private tour of the New Green Vault in Dresden’s Royal Palace: one of the greatest treasure collections in the world gold, silver, ivory, jewels, and mother-of-pearl masterworks of European Renaissance craftsmanship. Normally ticketed with timed entry; Tauck’s private tour provides context and access beyond the standard visitor experience.
Dinner atop the Reichstag in Berlin: the historic German Parliament building, reunified symbol of Germany’s democratic present. A special dinner in the Reichstag with sweeping views of Berlin’s illuminated skyline exclusive to Tauck guests on this itinerary.
Private visit and lunch at Neues Schloss Meersburg overlooking Lake Constance: an 18th-century former bishop’s castle on the Lake Constance waterfront, with views extending to the Austrian and Swiss Alps across the water
The Route: Frankfurt to Berlin via the Scenic Germany

Private lunch at Neues Schloss Meersburg | Heidelberg (Day 8) — castle ruins, university old town |
Meersburg castle town on the lakeshore | Dresden • New Green Vault • Berlin • Reichstag (Days 9–13) |
The Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof (Frankfurt) and the five-star Berlin hotel overlooking Gendarmenmarkt: Tauck uses premier city-center hotels throughout the Romantic Germany itinerary. The Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin the square flanked by the German and French Cathedrals and the Konzerthaus concert hall is widely considered the most beautiful square in Germany. Staying on it rather than near it is the Tauck hotel standard applied to every destination on the route.
Best months: Late April through June for spring Bavaria and green Alpine landscape. September for Oktoberfest tie-in (the Rhine cruise version is better for this). October for autumn Black Forest color. Avoid peak July/August if crowds are a concern; Germany’s summer crowds are manageable but July Neuschwanstein queues are long even with Tauck access.

Autumn Along the Rhine & Munich’s Oktoberfest: The Cruise That Ends at the World’s Greatest Festival
This is Tauck’s most distinctive Germany product and one of its most requested globally: a 7-night Rhine River cruise aboard ms Grace or ms Inspire from Amsterdam to Basel, followed by a 2-day land program ending at Munich’s Oktoberfest with reserved seats in an exclusive brewery tent. For anyone who wants to experience the real Oktoberfest not the tourist periphery, but the center of the action inside a traditional brewery tent this is the most organized, highest-value way to do it in the world.
The Oktoberfest Exclusive: Why Reserved Tent Seats Matter Oktoberfest has been running since 1810. Munich’s Theresienwiese fairground hosts over 6 million visitors every September across 17 large tents and 21 small tents run by Munich’s traditional breweries. The tent tables are owned and managed by the individual breweries Hofbräu, Paulaner, Augustiner, Späten, and others. The tables inside the traditional brewery tents are reserved by prior arrangement only, typically months or years in advance by regulars, corporate groups, and tour operators. Walking in off the street and finding a seat inside a large tent on a busy day ranges from difficult to impossible. Tauck has reserved seats for you in the center of the action, inside one of the exclusive traditional brewery tents, for a three-course Bavarian lunch with traditional live music including the Ein Prosit toasting song, communal singing, and the full Oktoberfest experience as it has been happening for 200 years. This is not a viewing experience. It is a participation experience, inside the tent, at the table, with the beer stein, the brass band, and the lederhosen-wearing Bavarians who have been coming to the same tent for decades. |
The Rhine Cruise Portion (Amsterdam to Basel, 7 nights)
Amsterdam: private canal boat cruise with local guide through the UNESCO 17th-century Canal Ring
Düsseldorf: walking tour of the Altstadt — Germany’s longest bar, the Kö shopping boulevard, local craft beer culture
Cologne: the Dom Cathedral — the largest Gothic cathedral in Germany, its twin spires the most recognizable skyline in Rhineland Germany
Heidelberg: guided tour of Heidelberg Castle, funicular descent to Old Town, and the Tauck Exclusive beer-pairing lunch of local dishes at an award-winning brewery with the brewmaster
Strasbourg: the Alsatian countryside, La Petite France half-timbered quarter, guided tour or bike ride
Basel: arrival and transfer to Munich for the Oktoberfest program
The Munich & Oktoberfest Land Portion (2 days)
Hotel Bayerischer Hof Munich: one of Munich’s grande dame hotels in the historic center
Day 1: Munich city tour including Nymphenburg Palace, Maximilianstrasse, Residenz, and the Marienplatz
Day 2: Oktoberfest — reserved seats in an exclusive traditional brewery tent for a three-course Bavarian lunch, live brass band, Ein Prosit toast, full festival atmosphere. Optional: stay the afternoon independently after lunch
Farewell dinner at your hotel
Day 3: Transfer to Munich Airport (Hotel Bayerischer Hof to airport included)
The Tauck Exclusive beer-pairing lunch in Heidelberg with the brewmaster: On the Rhine cruise day that visits Heidelberg, after touring the castle ruins above the city, Tauck takes guests to an award-winning Heidelberg brewery for a Tauck Exclusive lunch of regional German dishes paired with the brewery’s beers, with the brewmaster present to explain each pairing. This is a private Tauck booking at a working brewery — not a standard restaurant lunch. Two genuine Tauck Exclusive culinary events in one 9-night program.

Rhine & Moselle River Cruise: Two Rivers, One Extraordinary 14-Night Journey
For travelers who want the deepest possible Germany river cruise experience, Tauck’s Rhine & Moselle itinerary combines the standard Rhine run with a diversion up the Moselle Valley Germany’s most wine-intensive and least-touristed river landscape adding Bernkastel, Cochem, and Trier to the Rhine’s standard stops.
Rhine Valley and Rhine Gorge: 30+ castles, Lorelei Rock, Bingen, Rüdesheim, Heidelberg
Strasbourg and Alsace: French-German cultural blend, La Petite France, Alsatian wine country
Baden-Baden: Germany’s most glamorous spa town — Caracalla thermal baths, the Grand Casino, the Festspielhaus concert hall
Moselle Valley: Cochem (one of Germany’s most photographed castle towns), Bernkastel (Germany’s most beautiful wine village, every house half-timbered), Trier (Germany’s oldest city, founded by the Romans, with the best-preserved Roman ruins in Northern Europe)
Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial: 5,076 American soldiers buried in Luxembourg soil who died in the Battle of the Bulge. A Tauck Director who has studied this campaign changes what you experience at this site.
Tauck Exclusive: a special dinner at a historic German castle or palace — the Rhine & Moselle version uses the Rheingau wine estate perched in the mountains above the Rhine
Why Trier matters: I grew up in Trier, Trier is Germany’s oldest city, founded by the Romans around 16 BCE, and contains more intact Roman architecture than any city north of the Alps: the Porta Nigra city gate, the Imperial Baths, the Roman Bridge still carrying traffic across the Moselle, and the Basilica of Constantine. Most Rhine-only itineraries never reach it. The Rhine & Moselle gives it the day it deserves.
