Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Basel, Switzerland (Embarkation)

Your cruise begins in Basel, Switzerland's third-largest city and a cultural crossroads where Switzerland, France, and Germany converge along the Rhine. Basel has been a hub of banking, trade, and scholarship since the 4th century. Guests can choose from a guided walking tour of the Old Town and richly decorated Market Square, a cycling excursion through three countries, or a full-day optional excursion to Lucerne, home to medieval architecture dating to the 13th century. Wine lovers can enjoy a Swiss wine tasting aboard, while the more adventurous can visit the Rhine Falls, the most powerful waterfall in Europe.

Key Landmarks: Basel Rathaus (500-year-old town hall), Market Square, Rhine Falls, Lucerne (optional)

Day 2 — Strasbourg, France

Cross into Alsace, France's wine and culture frontier, where half-timbered houses and cobblestone streets reflect centuries of Franco-German heritage. A panoramic tour passes the Parc de l'Orangerie, the European Parliament, and the Place de la République before leading guests into the "La Petite France" district a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, begun in the early medieval period, is one of the great Gothic masterpieces of Europe. Cyclists can explore Strasbourg's diverse neighborhoods by bike. Wine enthusiasts won't want to miss sampling Alsace's distinctive white wines, including Riesling and Gewürztraminer.

Key Landmarks: La Petite France (UNESCO), Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, European Parliament Quarter, Alsatian wine tastings

Geographic Note: Strasbourg is located in the Grand Est region of northeastern France, at latitude 48.5°N on the west bank of the Rhine, directly bordering Germany.

Day 3 — Rüdesheim & Rhine Gorge, Germany

Arrive in Rüdesheim am Rhein, the celebrated wine village in the heart of Germany's Rheingau wine region. With over 1,000 years of viticulture, Rüdesheim produces some of Germany's finest Rieslings. Guests choose from a wide array of excursions: a gondola ride to the Niederwalddenkmal, a wine cellar tasting, a vineyard hike, or a cycling tour along the Rhine. Rüdesheim is also home to Siegfried's Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum, a quirky local treasure. Try the famous Rüdesheimer Kaffee coffee ceremoniously prepared with Asbach brandy and topped with whipped cream.

Later, sail through the breathtaking UNESCO-designated Rhine Gorge, where 40 medieval castles crown the steep, vineyard-lined riverbanks over a 65-kilometer stretch. This is widely considered the most scenic section of the entire Rhine River. The day ends in Lahnstein, where guests enjoy a private evening visit to the 13th-century Lahneck Castle — an AmaWaterways exclusive.

Key Landmarks: Niederwalddenkmal, Rüdesheim wine villages, Rhine Gorge (UNESCO World Heritage), Lahneck Castle

Geographic Note: The Rhine Gorge runs through the Middle Rhine Valley in the German states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse, between Bingen am Rhein and Koblenz.

Day 4 — Ludwigshafen & Heidelberg, Germany

From Ludwigshafen, guests venture to Heidelberg, the iconic university city nestled in the Neckar River Valley along Germany's celebrated Castle Road (Burgenstraße). Heidelberg's perfectly preserved medieval center is crowned by the dramatic red sandstone Heidelberg Castle, which dates to the 13th century and houses the Great Vat (Großes Fass)  an enormous 18th-century wine cask holding 49,000 gallons. History buffs may alternatively choose to visit Speyer, home to the largest Romanesque cathedral in Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with roots in the 11th century.

Key Landmarks: Heidelberg Castle, Great Vat, Heidelberg Old Town, Speyer Cathedral (optional)

Geographic Note: Heidelberg is located in Baden-Württemberg, southwestern Germany, approximately 22 km south of Mannheim at the confluence of the Neckar and Rhine rivers.

Day 5 — Cologne (Köln), Germany

Arrive in Cologne, Germany's fourth-largest city and one of the oldest, founded by the Romans in 38 BC as Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. A guided walking tour leads through the enchanting Old Town (Altstadt), visiting the Kölner Rathaus (Germany's oldest town hall), the Fischmarkt (dating to the 12th century), and the magnificent Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest examples of High Gothic architecture in the world, begun in 1248 and completed in 1880.

End the tour at a local tavern to taste Kölsch beer, Cologne's unique top-fermented lager that can only legally be brewed within the city. Active travelers can also bike along the Rhine riverbank.

Key Landmarks: Cologne Cathedral (UNESCO), Old Town, Kölner Rathaus, Fischmarkt, local Kölsch breweries

Geographic Note: Cologne is located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen) in western Germany at latitude 50.9°N, on the western bank of the Rhine.

Sail into Amsterdam, the final port and one of Europe's most iconic cities. With 165 canals winding through a compact historic center, Amsterdam's UNESCO-listed Canal Ring (Grachtengordel) is an architectural achievement of the Dutch Golden Age. A scenic canal cruise puts the city's famous narrow canal houses and arched bridges in gorgeous perspective. Guests have time to explore world-class museums, the famous Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum, and the vibrant Jordaan neighborhood before the ship's farewell.
