The Short Answer: Which River Cruise Line Is Best for Couples?

Uniworld is the most romantic for couples who want a floating boutique hotel, opulent décor, butler service in suites, and truly everything included. Tauck is best for couples who want private, money-can't-buy evenings, a gala in a Vienna palace, a château dinner on the Seine. AmaWaterways is best for active couples who want twin balconies, a wine-forward Chef's Table dinner, and biking or hiking together, often at the lowest fare of the three.

Written by Danny Stahl, certified travel advisor and founder of Danny's Adventures in Raleigh, NC. I grew up in Trier on Germany's Moselle River, spent years inside AmaWaterways, and our team is certified on AmaWaterways, Uniworld and Tauck. Booking through me costs the same as booking direct, you just get more.

What changed in 2026 (most "best river cruise for couples" posts miss this)

  • Tauck christened two new France ships in March 2026: ms Lumière (Rhône, 130 guests) and ms Serene (Seine, 124 guests), each with a pool, a wellness Retreat and 300-sq-ft Tauck Suites with a king bed facing two French balconies.

  • Uniworld launched S.S. Emilie on March 21, 2026 — a 154-guest, Klimt-inspired Super Ship — and is celebrating its 50th anniversary all year. It plans a fully Super Ship fleet by 2027.

  • AmaWaterways added AmaSofia in 2026, a new Italian lunch at The Chef's Table, 30+ included wines and "Savor at The Lark" all-day lounge dining. AmaFiora (Rhine) and AmaRudi (a second double-wide Danube ship) arrive in 2027.

  • Tauck adds six-day river cruises from late 2026 — including a Paris round-trip with a château gala — ideal for a long-weekend-length anniversary.

AmaWaterways vs Uniworld vs Tauck at a Glance

All three are luxury river lines; the gap is in what's included, how much space you get, and how private the experiences feel.

The 5 Most Romantic River Cruise Destinations for Couples

Paris, Lyon, Lake Como, Lake Lucerne and Vienna are the five places couples ask me about most — and each line handles them differently.

1. Paris and the Seine

Monet's garden at Giverny, Normandy's coast and the Eiffel Tower lit up as you sail back into Paris.

  • Uniworld: S.S. Joie de Vivre (128 guests, 2017) is designed around 20th-century Parisian style, with Le Bistrot serving onion soup and cassoulet under Moulin Rouge posters. The most "Paris" ship on the river.

  • Tauck: brand-new ms Serene (124 guests) sails Rendezvous on the Seine and Bordeaux, Paris & the Seine (3 nights in Bordeaux plus a 7-night cruise). From late 2026, the six-day Essence of the Seine round-trip from Paris includes a gala at a historic château.

  • AmaWaterways: Paris pre-cruise land packages pair with its France itineraries; ask me about current Seine departures.

Danny's Romance pick: Uniworld for décor, Tauck for the château evening.

2. Lyon, Burgundy and Provence (the Rhône)

France's food capital, Beaune's wine estates, lavender-country Avignon and Van Gogh's Arles.

  • AmaWaterways: Colors of Provence on AmaKristina (Lyon to Arles), offered with a 3-night Paris pre-cruise package — a Paris-to-Provence anniversary in one booking.

  • Uniworld: Burgundy & Provence on S.S. Catherine (159 guests), christened by Catherine Deneuve, with an indoor pool and Cézanne restaurant.

  • Tauck: ms Lumière (130 guests) sails Savoring France: Paris, Lyon & Provence and La Belle Vie: The Rhône, Geneva & the Riviera.

Danny's Romance pick: Tauck's Lumière for space; AmaWaterways for a Paris-plus-Provence value package.

3. Lake Como

No river ship sails Lake Como, couples reach it through cruise-and-land packages, so the line you choose decides how it fits.

  • Tauck: Rhine Enchantment (Amsterdam to Milan, 10 days) continues past Basel to Lugano and Lake Como, with Bellagio, Tremezzina and Cernobbio — Como is built into the journey, not bolted on.

  • AmaWaterways: Rhine Castles & Swiss Alps adds a 3-night Lake Como package (boat to Bellagio included) or 2 nights Lake Como + 2 nights Milan.

  • Uniworld: no packaged Como stay on these routes; I can build a private Lake Como extension around a Uniworld Rhine sailing.

Danny's Romance pick: Tauck if you want it seamless; AmaWaterways if you want three unhurried nights on the lake.

4. Lake Lucerne

Snow-capped peaks reflected in still water, a medieval covered bridge and an Old Town made for evening walks.

  • AmaWaterways: Rhine Castles & Swiss Alps offers a full-day Lake Lucerne excursion with a private lake cruise from Basel.

  • Tauck: Rhine itineraries ending in Basel visit Lucerne; Rhine Enchantment passes through Switzerland en route to Como.

  • Uniworld: Rhine sailings on S.S. Victoria and S.S. Elisabeth; Lucerne is best added as a pre- or post-stay.

Danny's Romance pick: AmaWaterways, the private lake cruise is the moment.

5. Vienna and the Danube

Waltzes, Klimt, Schönbrunn and the Wachau Valley's vineyards.

  • Tauck: every Danube sailing includes a Tauck Exclusive Imperial Evening at a private Vienna palace (Palais Pallavicini on many departures) with dinner, classical performers and, on some sailings, a waltz lesson.

  • Uniworld: S.S. Emilie, new in 2026 and inspired by Gustav Klimt and his muse Emilie Flöge, sails three new Danube itineraries, a fitting ship for a Vienna romance.

  • AmaWaterways: AmaMagna, the double-wide Danube ship, adds Jimmy's Wine Bar and more space per guest; AmaRudi joins in 2027.

Danny's Romance pick: Tauck for the palace gala; Uniworld Emilie for the Klimt connection.

Romantic Excursion in France
Romantic Excursion in France

My husband and I felt overwhelmed by the many choices for our 25th Anniversary trip to Europe. Danny suggested a river cruise on the Rhine and Moselle rivers with Uniworld. The Moselle River became our favorite because it flows more slowly, creating a sense of time standing still. We loved visiting the smaller towns like Cochem and Trier, where locals were more friendly and eager to connect with us. We enjoyed relaxing on the sun deck, sipping our wine as we watched castles drift by. It was truly an amazing and romantic experience - Sheila H. Denver, Colorado

Suite tips for couples

  • Tauck: book a Category 5 Tauck Suite on the Diamond Deck, king bed facing two French balconies, walk-in closet, separate shower. Over 80% of cabins on the new ships are 225 sq ft or larger.

  • Uniworld: book a suite for butler service; on S.S. Emilie, pairing a Grand Suite with the adjoining French-balcony stateroom creates a two-bedroom suite (great for a vow renewal with family).

  • AmaWaterways: the twin-balcony stateroom, a French balcony plus a full outside balcony is the best-value romantic cabin on any river.

  • All three: avoid cabins near the lobby or above the engine on the lowest deck if you're light sleepers.

What's Included: AmaWaterways vs Uniworld vs Tauck

Danny's take: for couples who enjoy a glass of wine on deck in the afternoon or a nightcap after dinner, Uniworld's and Tauck's all-day open bar removes every little signature. AmaWaterways couples who drink mainly with meals lose nothing.

Best months for a romantic river cruise

  • April–May: spring blossoms, fewer crowds; ideal for honeymoons after a spring wedding.

  • June: Provence lavender begins; long evenings for sunset on deck.

  • September–October: harvest season in Burgundy, the Wachau and the Rhine; my top pick for anniversaries.

  • Late November–December: Christmas Markets, mulled wine, twinkling squares, and a cozy cabin; AmaWaterways pairs Rhine markets with Lake Lucerne land stays.

  • Avoid for couples:  June through early September school-holiday weeks, when family departures cluster.

Where my clients save: through Avoya you don't pay more than booking direct, you get more, such as onboard credit or added amenities depending on the sailing.

  1. Book a brand-new ship's first season. Tauck's Lumière and Serene and Uniworld's Emilie are all in their debut year in 2026, everything is fresh, and crews are at their most eager.

  2. Lake Como isn't on a river. Choose the line whose land package fits how long you want there, Tauck folds it in, AmaWaterways gives you two or three nights.

  3. Request your Chef's Table date on AmaWaterways. It's once per cruise, make it your anniversary night.

  4. Ask for Tauck departures with a waltz lesson in Vienna for a 40th or 50th anniversary.

  5. Skip family-themed weeks — Uniworld Generations and Tauck Bridges — unless you want children company.

  6. Pair Paris and Provence in one booking. AmaWaterways' Colors of Provence with 3 nights in Paris, or Tauck's Savoring France, saves you planning the TGV.

  7. Pre-pay AmaWaterways gratuities so nothing interrupts the last morning.

  8. Fly into the start city a day early — a missed connection is the most common way a honeymoon cruise starts badly.

  9. Danny will make champagne and cake appear in your stateroom.

  10. Sail in September or early October for harvest, warm days.
