Best river cruise for solo travelers: the quick answer
Tauck is the most reliable choice for solo travelers. It waives the single supplement on every Category 1 cabin on every European river departure, and nearly everything is included in the fare. AmaWaterways offers the most solo choices: true single staterooms on four ships, plus waived or 10% supplements with promo codes through December 31, 2026. Viking has no dedicated solo cabins on its river ships and usually charges the highest single supplement, so book Viking solo only during a supplement sale.
I'm Danny Stahl, founder of Danny's Adventures. I worked inside AmaWaterways, and today I'm certified with AmaWaterways, Viking and Tauck. Many of my clients travel solo, and the single supplement is the first thing they ask about. Here is what each line really offers.
River ships with dedicated solo staterooms
Cruise line | Ships with dedicated solo staterooms | What you get |
AmaWaterways | AmaCello, AmaDante, AmaDolce, AmaLyra | A few single-occupancy staterooms per ship, about 140 sq ft with a French balcony. You pay the standard cruise fare, with no single supplement. |
Viking | None on river longships | Solo guests book a standard double stateroom and pay a single supplement. |
Tauck | None designated as "solo" | Category 1 cabins, the smallest category, carry no single supplement on every European river departure. On the new ms Serene and ms Lumière, Category 1 cabins are 180 sq ft, 20% larger than on Tauck's older riverboats. |
What this means: only AmaWaterways builds true single cabins. They are limited, so they sell out first. Tauck's Category 1 waiver works like a solo cabin on every ship, every sailing.
What they claim vs what solo travelers actually get
Cruise ads love the words "no single supplement." Here is the fine print, line by line.
AmaWaterways
The headline | The reality |
"Single supplement waived" | Only on select 2027 Europe sailings, booked by December 31, 2026, with code SOLOWAIVED. Priced from a Category E stateroom. Suites are excluded. |
"Applies to most stateroom categories, including balconies" | The terms base the rate on Category E and exclude all suites (A+, AA+, S, SS, GS, OS). Ask exactly which category you'll get before paying. |
"10% single supplement" | Select 2026 and 2027 Europe sailings only (the banner also mentions Colombia and Asia, but the terms say Europe). Code SOLO10. Suites excluded. |
"Solo staterooms" | Real, but only "a few" per ship on four ships: AmaCello, AmaDante, AmaDolce and AmaLyra. |
Fare includes the extras | Gratuities, transfers, port charges and airfare are not included in the solo offers. |
Viking
The headline | The reality |
"Single supplement savings" | Viking runs these on select departures from time to time. Outside a sale, solo travelers often pay 50% to 100% more than a single fare. |
Solo cabins? (common assumption) | No dedicated solo cabins on any Viking river longship. You pay for a two-person stateroom. |
Included excursion in every port | True, and genuinely valuable for solo travelers. Wine and beer with lunch and dinner are included too. |
A published supplement rate? (common assumption) | Viking does not publish a set percentage. You only see your price at quote time. |
Tauck
The headline | The reality |
"No single supplement" | Real, and the most generous of the three. Waived on all Category 1 riverboat cabins across 250+ 2026 European river departures. |
Solo-friendly on every cabin | The full waiver applies to Category 1 only, the smallest cabins on the lowest deck. Other categories get $1,000 off the supplement on select departures. |
All-inclusive | True. Excursions, gratuities, drinks and transfers are included, so a solo fare has few surprise costs. |
Limited cabins | Category 1 cabins are few per ship and are the first to sell out. Book early. |
My honest verdict: Tauck's solo promise is the most dependable. AmaWaterways' is the most flexible, if you book before the deadline. Viking's solo value depends entirely on timing a sale.

6 tips for booking a solo river cruise
Book early. Solo staterooms and Category 1 cabins are the fewest on any ship and sell out first. Twelve months ahead is a good target.
Compare the total, not the headline. A "waived" supplement on a ship without included tips and drinks can still cost more than Tauck's all-inclusive fare.
Ask which cabin category the offer covers. Many solo deals apply to the lowest category only.
Consider shoulder season. Spring and late fall often bring more solo offers and quieter ships.
Choose a ship with social spaces. Smaller ships, shared tables and guided excursions make it easy to meet people.
"As a solo traveler from California, I was initially nervous about embarking on a Rhine River cruise by myself. Danny quickly reassured me, explaining that river cruising is one of the safest and most welcoming environments for solo travelers. He went above and beyond to find an itinerary with no single supplement, saving me an incredible $6,000! I connected with two wonderful fellow solo travelers on board. We still keep in touch to this day and are already planning our next river cruise together."— Sandra V.

Tauck is the most dependable, with no single supplement on Category 1 cabins on every European river departure. AmaWaterways is best if you want a true single stateroom or a solo balcony deal.
Does Viking have single cabins on river cruises?
No. Viking river longships have no dedicated solo cabins. Solo travelers book a standard stateroom and pay a single supplement, which Viking sometimes reduces during sales.
Which AmaWaterways ships have single staterooms?
AmaCello, AmaDante, AmaDolce and AmaLyra each have a few single-occupancy staterooms of about 140 sq ft with French balconies, with no single supplement.
Is there a promo code for solo river cruises?

Not on Category 1 cabins, on any European river departure. Other categories get $1,000 off the supplement on select 2026 departures.
How much is the single supplement on a river cruise?
It ranges from zero on Tauck Category 1 cabins, to 10% to 25% with AmaWaterways offers, to 50% to 100% or more on Viking outside a sale.
