Two Great Lines. One Big Decision.
When it comes to European river cruising, AmaWaterways and Avalon Waterways are two of the most frequently compared cruise lines in the world and for good reason. Both sail the Rhine, Danube, Seine, Douro, and other iconic European waterways. Both offer all-inclusive fares, modern fleets, and high-quality service. Both attract experienced travelers who want more than a mass-market tour bus experience.
But they are not the same. The differences are subtle on paper and significant in practice — and choosing the wrong one for your travel style can mean paying for features you don't care about while missing the ones you do.
Here's the honest breakdown.

The Cabin Question: Twin Balcony vs. Panorama Suite
This is where most travelers make their decision and it comes down to a genuine philosophical difference in cabin design.
AmaWaterways Twin-Balcony Stateroom
AmaWaterways' signature cabin combines two balcony experiences in one: a French balcony (floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that open to let in air and sound) and a full step-out balcony where you can actually sit outside. The trade-off is space standard staterooms run 160–210 sq ft, with the twin-balcony setup using some of that footprint. The experience is flexible: fresh air and outdoor seating when you want it, climate-controlled comfort when you don't.
Avalon Waterways Panorama Suite
Avalon reimagined the river cruise cabin from scratch. Their Panorama Suites feature the industry's first wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling sliding windows — 14 feet wide — that open to create an open-air balcony effect. Critically, the bed faces the river. You wake up to the passing scenery. Nearly 80% of cabins on Avalon's Suite Ships feature this design, with rooms measuring 200–300 sq. ft notably more spacious than AmaWaterways' standard category. There is no true step-out balcony, but the sense of openness and light is exceptional.
Shore Excursions: More Choice vs. More Flexibility
AmaWaterways includes multiple excursion options at every port often five or more per day at no extra charge. These range from gentle walking tours to bike rides, vineyard hikes, and exclusive private experiences like the Lahneck Castle evening visit on the Rhine. The variety is genuinely exceptional, and the active options (cycling, hiking) are built into the fare without upcharge.
Avalon Waterways includes one excursion per port in the base fare typically a guided panoramic or city walking tour with additional excursions available for purchase. Avalon's Adventure Hosts facilitate active options and independent exploration, and the line emphasizes flexibility: guests who prefer to explore independently pay a lower base fare and buy only what they want.
My verdict: If you want maximum included excursion variety and active options without extra charges, AmaWaterways delivers more value. If you prefer a lighter, more flexible structure and tend to explore independently, Avalon's model suits you better.
Pricing: What You Actually Pay
Both lines are similarly priced in the premium tier not budget, not ultra-luxury. On a comparable 7-night Rhine sailing in June 2026 & 2027 (Nuremberg to Budapest):
Cabin Category | AmaWaterways | Avalon Waterways |
Entry/Fixed Window | $4,199 per person | $4,330 per person |
Balcony/Panorama Suite | $6,048–$6,248 per person | $5,479 per person |
Suite | $8,198 per person | $6,579–$7,329 per person |
Avalon's entry fare is slightly higher but its Panorama Suites and Royal Suites price out lower than AmaWaterways' equivalent balcony cabins. Neither line includes gratuities. Airfare is separate on both.

Are two adults traveling without young children
Why Book Through Me & Not Direct
Both AmaWaterways and Avalon price the same regardless of where you book. But working with a specialist means:
Honest side-by-side guidance — I work with both lines every day and will tell you which one genuinely fits your priorities, not which one has a better brochure.
Exclusive amenities — onboard credits, cabin upgrades, and added perks not available when booking direct.
Complete trip planning — flights, pre/post hotel stays, travel insurance, and packing lists all handled in one place, so nothing falls through the cracks.
My service is free. The perks are real. And the right cruise is waiting.
