Traveling on the Rhône River aboard AmaWaterways' AmaKristina is truly an extraordinary experience. I have a special fondness for the Rhône River, particularly Lyon, which I believe is the culinary capital of France, far more so than Paris. If you enjoy wine, love food, are interested in truffle hunting, want to learn how to bake macarons, and appreciate romance while connecting with your loved ones, then this is the perfect cruise for you. My favorite market in Lyon is Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse. It must be seen to be believed, with incredible charcuteries, fromageries, and fantastic fruit vendors that awaken all your senses.

Gliding down the Rhône feels like reading a well‑worn travel diary: sunlit vineyards, hilltop villages, Roman ruins, and Provencal markets just a stroll from your ship. AmaWaterways’ Rhône sailings pair relaxed, intimate river cruising with curated local experiences — from truffle hunts to walking in Van Gogh’s footsteps, and the AmaKristina stands out as the Rhône’s largest river vessel, offering spacious public areas and most staterooms with outside French balconies for uninterrupted views. Trust me, stepping out onto your balcony and sipping on your morning coffee and viewing the south of France landscape is something to behold.

Why the Rhône? The Rhône links two contrasting faces of France: elegant Lyon and the lavender‑strewn, light‑filled landscapes of Provence. It’s a route for food lovers, history buffs, and those seeking gentle, culturally rich days ashore. Port towns like Arles, Avignon, Tournon, Viviers, and Lyon put museums, markets, Roman amphitheaters, and vineyards within easy walking distance of the gangway.

The AmaKristina which is the Rhône’s largest ship. The AmaKristina is designed for river life: wider public spaces, a generous sun deck, and a higher percentage of staterooms with outside French balconies than many Rhône ships. That means more natural light, private fresh‑air access, and panoramic views from your cabin. The ship’s size also allows expanded dining options, small‑group enrichment programs, and comfortable common areas where you can meet fellow travelers without feeling crowded.

AmaKristina Rhone River Cruise

My favorite Rhone excursions

  • Truffle hunting & tasting (Provence): A foray into oak groves with a local truffle hunter and trained dogs, followed by tasting courses that spotlight regional black truffles.

  • Walk Van Gogh’s footsteps (Arles & Saint‑Rémy): Guided walks through the landscapes and streets that inspired Van Gogh, ending at sites featured in his paintings.

  • Avignon & the Popes’ Palace: Explore medieval ramparts, the Palais des Papes, and lively local markets.

  • Tournon & Hermitage wine tastings: Hilltop vineyards producing robust Rhône reds and fragrant whites, perfect paired tastings led by local vintners.

The best times to cruise the Rhône

  • Spring (April–June): Blooming landscapes, milder temps, fewer crowds, excellent for outdoor excursions and markets.

  • Late summer / early fall (September–October): Harvest season in the vineyards, truffle season ramps up (Sept–Nov), and light becomes golden for photography.

  • Avoid high midsummer (July–Aug) If you dislike crowds and heat like I do avoid this time

My Favorite pre- and post-cruise land extensions

  • Barcelona, Spain (3 Nights): A popular option, allowing guests to explore the Sagrada Familia, Gothic Quarter, and Park Güell before taking a short flight to meet the ship.

  • Paris, France (2 or 3 Nights): Typically includes high-speed train travel (TGV) from Paris to Lyon to board the ship.
